Hi there updating a new post for XWD164X.
Been slow with this as been busy with a Rover 214 after trying a and then selling a 45.
Will add some photos as have an Ambassador in store, Herefordshire barn, awaiting funds to try a restore . It is a red 2.0 HL , but no rear wiper so model may be L .
Rust is all around bottom of doors and wheel arches and still to see underside but floor seams solid and engine is part restored .
Happy to share the story as am a new member , 6 months ago ha ha.

As well am involved in a Gold Ambassador which is at my brother”s place and it is nearer running order but for Covid lock down delays.

Looking for encouragement to keep going with the project or advice what to do with it

It is great that there are several Ambassadors being restored at present. Although I personally prefer to drive my Wolseley IMO my Ambassador is the better car. It’ll be worth it when it’s done!

To be fair, the cosmetics can be sorted out much further down the line and not every car necessarily needs a full restoration. Sometimes you can have more enjoyment from a car that is a good, solid and honest example with some patina, although reliability is always a desirable factor! (A friend of mine has a 1983 Vauxhall Cavalier which has been used a few times for TV/film work: the agency who arranges this have told him not to get the bodywork fully restored as it can be very difficult to find period cars in 'used' condition)

The lack of rear wiper is, I believe, evidence of the absolutely dire level of specification the HL was given at launch: maybe BL had looked at what VW did (and still do, so I am told lol) and put everything on the options list. From late 1982, the whole range was up-specced as part of a 'VFM' programme so you will probably notice a few differences between your red HL and your later gold HL.

It's great to see that this car ended up going to an enthusiast. If you read my post (TTF 665Y) you'll know that I was initially interested in purchasing XWD - but things worked out very differently for me, and I now have TTF 665Y instead.

I will give you, and anyone else, as much encouragement as I possibly can when it comes to Ambassadors. They are one of my favourite cars, I absolutely love them!

Some say I am mad, and almost everyone else just laughs and knocks the car and makes fun.
But whatever! Not my job to figure out what's wrong with them!

I have just started a partial restoration on mine, to repair some serious water ingress damage.
I will be documenting my progress and posting pictures and updates in my thread.

If you're wanting encouragement, I would say keep a look in on my thread, I will keep a look on on yours and if I can offer any helpful advice of course I will do. Plus there is also the PM if you want, and other members whom I'm sure will also give you as much encouragement and advice as they can.

Thanks for the support and will update as progress made. Jon my brother is in full flow with the Gold HL, with rear wash wipe ha ha.

In my post I see some extra Xmas photos got picked up but even after editing them out I still see them so wonder is everyone seeing them or just the car?

We ordered two windscreen runners from the new batch so thanks for that also.

We can all see the extra photos! I was going to delete them for you when you posted but there was a risk I would lose all the photos if I interfered as admin so I left them!

Hi All,
I have been in contact with two Herefordshire body shops and probably will work with Tony Williams in Much Marcle.
They are due to send me an estimate with breakdown to include lower body rust and welding works and I ask if they could consider the option not doing a full strip and respray as I also would like to keep some age related colour fade but want panels solid.
As they would be doing the preparation removal of trims and parts I am expecting a cost between £5 - £7 K so hope that sounds fare.

Would anyone know of any front Ambassador wings and lower side sills rust free ? Would think that could help reduce welding and panel beating cost ha ha.

The other body shop I spoke to is Blacktop Restorations in Ledbury,
He was mainly interested to take the whole car down to bare metal then repair and total respray which is an option but looking at his gallery of work he is working on high end antique sports cars and metal work fabrications to a higher cost than I would like to spend.

Will update as any progress made.
