A welcome bonus that will eventually help us all has started to benefit the very earliest wedges (1974 build):

As I am sure you are all aware, the last Labour administration (Prudence Brown) stopped the rolling VED exemption for cars over 25 years. The current Coalition has finally re-instated the free VED for cars over 40 years old. Let's hope the result of the General Election does not mean this welcome rolling tax saving (or is that tax avoidance) will again be rescinded.

That is not correct. Have you misread 1969 for 1979?!

After April 1st 2019:

You do not need to pay vehicle tax if your vehicle was built before 1 January 1979.
If you do not know when your vehicle was built, but it was first registered between 1 and 7 January 1979, you do not have to pay vehicle tax.

Thus for next year it will need to be built before 1/1/1980 or registered before 7/1/1980 to be exempt from April 1st 2020. I think your car was registered in March 1980 so you will have to provide to the DVLA that it was built before Jan 1st 1980. You can get that information from BMIHT at a cost... If it was you will be exempt from April 2020. If not April 1st 2021 I am afraid.

As good an excuse to get a heritage certificate as you’ll ever need!
